Wagga streetscapes, 1970s to 2000s
It is important for museums to collect and document contemporary history. If we don't collect the history of today, there will be no artifacts from this time for the people of tomorrow.
It is surprising how quickly the buildings, streets and facades of a city can change, as can be seen in a collection of contemporary photographs dating to the period 1970 - c. 2003 taken by Dell and Peter Bungay.
Dell and her husband have always had a keen interest in the changing face of Wagga. Through their camera lens, they have witnessed (and captured) drought, floods, celebrations, street decorations, parks, the River and have documented the demolition of some buildings, and the erection of others.
Such collections of photographs, although depicting the everyday, provide us with a valuable photographic portrait of this great city. They allow us to tell the story of Wagga from the days of early settlement through to 21st century. Without them, the story may be lost, as former streetscapes pass from living memory.
The Museum of the Riverina is always looking for photographs relating to the history of Wagga - families, businesses, buildings and events. Please contact us if you can help! museum@wagga.nsw.gov.au
